How to Organize Your Life as a Multi-Passionate Person

This was my very first podcast interview, which aired back in January 2023 with the infamous Inger Kenobi.

Although we may have never shared physical space, this special lady wove a lot of magic into my life at the pivotal time of becoming a soulpreneur. During our one-on-one virtual sessions across the big pond, a certain amount of creative static would be generated, invigorating and re-energizing me.

On Inger’s podcast, we banter about what it’s like to sometimes feel lost in the waves of so many delicious creative ideas, and my own special “parking lot” idea that still captures those little nugget ideas I don’t want to escape me. Have a listen!

How do you stay organized as a mom, business owner, or creative?

This parking lot has given me a sense of control and peace, knowing I don’t need to fear forgetting something. It helps me stay more focused. It’s similar to writing lists – but I make mine disposable with a fast turnaround.

Staying organized as a busy individual in a noisy world can be challenging, but it’s essential for maintaining productivity and peace of mind. Here are four key reasons WHY someone might want to stay organized—in other words, these are the results for me when I am NOT organized:

1. Efficiency:

Organization streamlines tasks and processes, allowing me to complete them more efficiently. With clear systems in place, time-wasting activities are minimized, and tasks can be tackled with focus and purpose.

2. Reduced Stress:

Clutter and disorganization give me feelings of overwhelm and stress. By staying organized, I can alleviate mental clutter and create a sense of calm amidst the chaos of everyday life. A certain snowball effect happens when I am not organized, need something, or cannot find it fast enough, which leads to even more frustration. I try to avoid this at all costs!

3. Improved Focus:

Organization helps me prioritize my tasks and goals, keeping them focused on what truly matters. It also allows me to better see what tasks will require longer segments of focused time while others can be done quickly. I can make meaningful progress toward my daily or long-term objectives by eliminating distractions and maintaining a clear direction.

4. Enhanced Productivity:

When everything is in its proper place and tasks are well-managed, my productivity naturally increases. I can accomplish more in less time, making the most of my busy schedule and achieving the desired outcomes. That’s the end goal, right?

5. Peace of Mind:

Knowing that everything is under control and nothing important is slipping through the cracks provides a profound sense of peace—and that is everything to me. This peace of mind allows me to approach my daily responsibilities confidently and clearly, ultimately leading to greater overall well-being. I didn’t come this far only to feel overwhelmed and powerless!

Regardless, we all need systems to enable focus, prioritize tasks, and maintain peace of mind!

That’s all fine and dandy, but we all need tangible tools that help put those pieces in order. Here are my go-to organizational tasks:

  • Parking Lot for long-range goals or ideas

  • Whiteboard for daily or weekly lists

  • Clean email inbox (I DESPISE inbox clutter!)

  • Time Blocking

  • Bullet Journaling

  • Decluttering

  • Meal Planning (well, maybe not in my new life with Steven)

  • Morning Routine – meditation, quick kitchen cleaning, journaling or planning the day, etc.

  • Bedtime routine – relaxing warm beverage, listening to inspirational podcasts, plenty of relaxation

  • Get Shit Done Day – I save this for special occasions

  • Solo Writing Retreats

  • Binder System & Post It Notes

  • Finish what I start – stop leaving things undone

  • Purposeful Downtime

  • So many more…

Those tasks are not rocket science – but they are Heather-science. They are essential to the systems that keep me balanced and happy.
